Having printer icons on the mac's desktop is relateively "new" (although 
imho, a waste of real-estate unless you're using a fax or something) - but 
you've been able to select several files in the finder, and choose 
"print" or use command-p from the file menu for quite a while now - does 
the same thing you mentioned above.
