Do you feel unable to answer "No" when the registration wizard asks if
you would like to register online?  That's all you have to do people,
just answer "No"  But it sounds as if people claiming to be everything
from super hackers to system administrators haven't figured out how to
use that button.

Is it ok if they run AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy, or any other
communications program?  That modem sends info in both directions so
all those scenarios people are imagining could just as easily be
accomplished by any program that establishes a connection with your
computer.  Hey, maybe as you are posting this your sysadmin is peeking
at your files right now.
