So. I create a Postscript file and write it to an MsDOS disk. I stick
it in a Mac down at Kinko's, and select "print" from the finder menu.
What happens? Do I
1: I get a box telling me that the file has an unknown application.
2: I get a plain-text listing of the Postscript code.
3: Get a proper Postscript printout.
Case 3 is the correct answer. The last time I tried this on a Mac,
(admittedly, it was a few years ago, just after System 7 came out), I
got case 1.
On a unix box, the default behavior is case 3 if it is going to a
Postscript printer, and case 2, otherwise. A bit of work with the
printer filters, though, and you can easily make the system produce
case 3 in every case. (i.e., if the document is a postscript document,
and it is going to a non-postscript printer that gs can produce output
for, run the document through gs before sending it to the printer.)
