Absolutely correct, the best solution is to have experts do it. But I was
foolish enough to install linux myself rather than cart my system over to
UCR to have experts do it. Now a friend had a caching controller card that
remapped the track/sector layout for DOS compatibility. This system
appeared to have more than 16 heads. The current linux kernel could not
handle this so the students recompiled the kernel to customize it for this
one machine. No pain and grief for my friend. No problem for the students
since they have done this sort of thing many times in the past. If my
friend had to go through this himself he probably would have decided linux
was not worth the trouble. 

The easiest way to install linux is to have someone else do it for you :-).

Maybe other universities could set up free linux installation sites. This
may be a good way to help people without a UNIX background get started?
