If memory serves me correctly, unix hackers had a handle on the problem
within hours of it's outbreak, that being possible because of the open
nature of unix. Are you advocating "security thru obscurity"? That is a 
truly bogus (and naive) way of thinking...

Can you just imagine if this had occurred with nt?

The endless calls to ms tech support, the foot-dragging by clueless
support people, the "upgrade packages" you would have to buy from ms -

The outcome would have been different, to be sure...
