Wishful thinking? The 68000 has a 16-bit ALU.

Nope. Not even Motorola claimed this. A cpu with a 16-bit data bus
and a 16-bit ALU is by no means a 32-bit processor.
The first 32-bit 68k was the 020. Launched about at the same time as
the first 32-bit x86, the 386.
