In all but one of the above cases the UNIX variants had no competition
whatsoever -- if you wanted the machine, you had to buy UNIX.

I'm a huge fan of UNIX.  It's the closest thing to developer nirvana
I've run across, and I use it every day.  But it is quite wrong to
attribute the above vendors' sales to UNIX when there's no data
whatsoever on how well a competitor might have done.  If you look at
markets in which UNIX does have competitors you find that it doesn't
do so well, eg the PC, Mac II, and IBM mainframe environments.

This is part of why I think that the workstation UNIX market is going
to get shaken up by NT in a couple of years.  They've lived so long
without any competition that they've forgotten how well other things
can compete.
