I got into it by "accident" -- I advertized myself : as a computer expert, but wasn't specific. It's funny how almost all my jobs : turned out to be Mac related. People wanted me to do all kinds of stuff from : graphics to database design. If it is so easy, why do people need to : hire help? Because there's only 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week? I get lots of work from people who need things *right now*, and it's more cost-effective for them to pay me a lot of money to come fix the machine than it is for them to spend the three hours figuring things out for themselves. This week, I'm going to be paid an obscene amount of money to do some graphics work because the guy who is normally paid to do it needs to sleep more than ten minutes a night. Not to mention the occasional user who Really Doesn't Want To Use Computers, Dammit! ...and the problems I really earn my fee on are things like "I think our network got struck by lightning" (it was)- "can you help us?" (I did). Most of my clients have minor problems- and I can fix about half of those over the phone. About a quarter of the problems I see are fixable by removing Microsoft products from the hard drive (OLE is a major culprit). -- Chad Irby / My greatest fear: that future generations will, cirby@gate.net / for some reason, refer to me as an "optimist."
