I've never had a unix user do a rm -r * on the entire / directory. ;) Naive question: what is such a command supposed to do, on a correctly installed system, when typed by Joe User? Answer: it will remove all the files from the directories where Joe User has write access (on some systems there are additional restrictions). The sysadmin who gave Joe User write access to / will get exactly what s/he deserves. Question: how does the sysadmin protects / from an "rm -r *" mistakenly typed by himself or other sysadmin?
