Hello everyone. I don't know why everyone is comparing Win95 to the hunk
of poorly-designed crap known as the Mac!

First off, both are crap, don't waste hard earned $$$ on either.

Second, if you want to argue, the Mac sys 7.5 NEVER had preemptive
multitasking (system allots time). It has a crap-form where an app
grabs as much time as it wants, and gives it back when it's done. This
is Win3.1, people! This is a TASK-SWITCHER.

You want real multitasking? The mac won't do it. Get OS/2, UNIX, or
just about anything decent. Of course, if you want excellence, get an
amiga.

BTW: What caused the confusion about whether system 7.5 has everything
a GOOD machine has is that it has 32-bit addressing and some degree of
plug&play (which is no more real than Micorsoft's, since ALL SCSI
peripherals are P&P, and MS's only works with major brand name parts)

<snicker> Of course. The platform they can hardly *give* away. It
*must* be the best!

In reality, MacOS is the only competition Win95 has. No one else has
anywhere near the volume to have a chance.

You might try learning something about computers before you post. Mac
System 6 task switched. Mac System 7 and above _does_ multitask (as does
Win3.1). It's called cooperative multitasking. Different from Pre-emptive
multitasking, but it works.

Suppose you tell me where I can buy an Amiga with 1/2 the power of a good
PowerMac. As for multitasking--can you explain why I _need_ preemptive
multitasking? Cooperative works well enough for now (though PMT will be an
improvement, I don't consider it an essential one) for me and all of our
computer users.

If you're trying to compare MacOS PnP to Microsoft's, you _really_ don't
have a clue. MacOS PnP _works_. Win3.1 doesn't even have it and Win95
works some percentage (<< 100%) of the time.

Using five different platforms concurrently (DEC Alpha Unix, Solaris 2.4,
DEC VAX/VMS, Linux and Windows), it is fairly safe to say that preemptive
multitasking is superior to cooperative multitasking. Firstly, PMT is
adept at preventing errant programs from locking up the system. How often
has Windows 3.11 locked up on me because something crashed in the fore-
ground! Secondly, PMT allows programs to have a better share of CPU slots,
even in the presence of I/O intensive applications which, in a cooperative
multitasking environment, might not relinquish its slot until some time
intensive task is done (e.g., writing a tape or floppy). The net effect
is better apparent response time.

The problem with the Amiga, even though it does have PMT is the lack of
memory management and protection.

Best regards,
Derick.

I think it is easier for a company which in fact does have a form of monopoly
(Apple) to create a PnP system. They make all the hardware of CURSE they can
make it PnP, they designed it they sure as hell better be able to. However to
add PnP to a giant group of hardware and then have it work "some percentage"
sounds good to me. It aint perfect but it has worked pretty darn good for me.
There really is no comparison between the two.
