486 PowerMac emulator

Last July I read in our Australian version of MacWorld (p19, lower right)
that a company called "Utilities Unlimited International" was developing a
486 emulator for the PowerMac that will support DOS, Windows, Unix, OS/2
and Win NT. It also said that this emulator will give Pentium performance!
Can anyone confirm this? I would also appreciate any information
concerning this company - address, phone fax etc.

Thanks.

Gareth (not-a-Powell).

It's complete vaporware at the moment... The guy has written a great
emulator for Amiga, but it took twice as long as he promised, and was full
of bugs for quite a while...

May be so but Apple are releasing an Intel chip base add on card that will run
DOS/Windows conurrently with the Apple systems (note to fit a Power PC)

There are also available from apple and others Softwindows that will run
DOS/Windows applications on Power PC's as well as (the name escapes me now
but I think it is) SoftDos to run on DOS/Windows on Traditional Motorola base
Mac's.

They may be third party developed but they are being packaged onto systems by
Apple.

I've read the same thing somewere, but I didn't even remeber the name of the company. But I will try to use every resource on the Net to get hol of an address or a tlf-number. If I'm in luck I will get back to you...

This is very interesting and the price was supposed to be much lower than the PCcard for the P-Mac.

It was in mac week here in america too. I believe the company name is
Utilities Unlimited International. You can find adds for their products in
amiga magazines. They make the "Emplant Board," a mac/pc/sega genesis emulator
for the amiga. He has a good/bad reputation among amiga users. RUMOR (read
total hearsay) says that he tends to boast about his product and sell it before
it is ready for release. His mac emulator is supposed to run flawlessly on
an amiga ... now. For the first year after its release people kept having to
get replacement boards because all the bugs wern't worked out of the system
yet. People complained that he was using his customers as beta testers. His
board in an amiga with an 040 processor can supposedly run as well or slightly
better than a quadra with the same processor. He is supposed to have great
products ... once he ever releses them.

If you read mac week from about a month later, mac the knife writes that
the fellow stoped advertising his product and would not discuss it with
anyone. He speculated that the fellow's product was getting bought by
another company (apple, ibm, or insignia). No one has heard from him since
on the program. A real pity in my opinion.

Jim Drew has DEFINITELY NOT been bought out by Apple and is still
producing the Emplant Mac Emulation for the Amiga.

I've been using it since it came out and although it's had a lot of
growing pains, I find it a stable product and reasonably fast.

He's prematurely (at best) announced a 486/586 emulation for the Emplant
and Mac/PowerPC and some rather anxious "reporters" desperate for good
copy jumped to print it's imminent release.

The 486/586 Emplant emulation is still unreleased although it is
supposedly almost ready and is to be shown at a computer show in England.

There has been no further news of the Mac/PowerPC 486/586 product.

It sells right now. 486dx2/66, SIMM-slot or shared RAM, 512 VRAM and
has ethernet via the macs built-in.
Pretty amazing really.

The fellows name is Jim Drew and you can often find his uhm
overexaggerations in comp.sys.amiga.emulations.

Neither the PC or Sega emulation is out yet for the Amiga and he
repeatedly makes excuses for them.

That's what he and and some Amiga users say but when you actually run Mac
applications you'll find that the math is slightly faster but the
graphics speed is pathetic.

I have to say, that article in MacWeek turned out to be the most utter
collection of garbage I've seen in quite a while. This guy may be still
working on his emulator, and I don't fault him for any misrepresentation,
but MacWeek claimed that this thing would be out by "late summer" (1994)
and would run os/2, windows, windows NT, dos, and unix. Also, it would
perform on an 8100 faster than available Pentiums. Let me get this
straight: he's going to run something in emulation (on a chip that by
official specmarks is only slightly ahead of a pentium) faster than a
pentium? Only way this is conceivable is if the system calls are all
native; is he going to port each of the above operating systems? Is he
then going to read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one
day and still refurbish his dining room that evening?

Not bloody likely.
