can't boot...

This last weekend we wanted to format our zd1a disk. So we copyed over zd1a
(our boot disk) to zd3a and wanted to boot up the system single user from
zd3a. We had, we thought, a geniric kernel setup on zd3a to boot. Yet
everytime we would try to boot the system would just hang at the test. of the
bootstrap. it just sat there dead in the water. Next we tryed to boot up from
an old tape (3.0.17). It also would not boot. so we had to give up and let it
reboot from zd1a dynix as always. Anyone know how to make it boot from
something other than zd1?

try making a kernel with a root and swap at zd3a while your current system is
running. when you copy your root over to zd3 be sure that this new kernel
is /dynix. things then will be just fine. you also need to be sure there
is a boot block on zd3 and a /boot file on zd3a. see the installboot command

you might try using a true generic kernel. i have no experience with that,
but i have used the above procedure several times with success.
