Exceed file size limit, but no SIGXFSZ

I have a program that does:

    setrlimit(RLIMIT_FSIZE, ....) /* hard limit 1000, soft 100 */
    signal(SIGXFSZ, sigtrap)
/* then fork() and execlp() */

Even though the child process dies when it tries to write a small
file, the signal handler never gets called.

Is this a Dynix (v4.1.4) problem or my imagination?
