SMTP bounce mail

Hi - PTX 1.1.1 here...

We send and receive mail from our PTX systems to our Internet gateway
system via SMTP. recently, our gateway system was down, and mail destined
for it (or beyond) was being bounced back after ten minutes, instead of
staying in the queue for days and days.

What's wrong here? What do I need to change? Here's a couple of fragments
from our sendmail.cf file. I thought that the OT option described how long
it would be before a mail message would bounce. Also, I can't find
anything in the "F=" options that would make mail messages bounce almost
immediately.

sendmail.cf options fragment:

# wait up to ten minutes for alias file rebuild
Oa10
# substitution for space (blank) characters
OB.
# (don't) connect to "expensive" mailers
#Oc
# default delivery mode (deliver in background)
Odbackground
# temporary file mode
OF0600
# default GID
Og1
# log level
OL9
# default network name
ONARPA
# default messages to old style
Oo
# queue directory
OQ/usr/spool/mqueue
# read timeout -- violates protocols
Or2h
# status file
OS/usr/lib/sendmail.st
# queue up everything before starting transmission
Os
# default timeout interval
OT3d

sendmail.cf local tcp mailer fragment:

Mtcpld,	P=[IPC], F=mDFMueXLC, S=17, R=27, A=IPC $h, E=\r\n

The most likely guess is that you have a version of sendmail which does
not read MX records. Instead it is perhaps using gethostbyname() in
a version doing nameserver lookups. But if the code in sendmail is
not DNS aware, it will not be able to distinguish between a temporary
name lookup failure (due to your gateway problem) and a permanent
failure due to a non-existent host.

Most likely your only good solution is to get a better version of sendmail.
