You may have read my earlier posting about vanishing routing table entries. One respondent suggested a kernel bug (deleting the default route), and another suggested that I try gated. I was already going to try gated anyway, so.... I managed, after a few hours, to build gated, but it exits early on saying "procotol not supported" on the attempt to create a SOCK_RAW socket to receive ICMP packets on. So, now, The Question. Does anyone out there know what the (undocumented) magic is which allows you to receive ICMP (and EGP/HELLO) packets? Is it a device driver which must be pushed onto ip? How does ping manage? Can I just open /dev/ip and do a magic ioctl? Help... Your reward will be a complete PTX version of gated, should you desire that.
