Xman crashes xdm

Under IRIX 4.0.1, the manual browser Xman version 3.1.4-X11R4
frequently crashes xdm. In the SYSLOG I find error messages from
UNIX about a FIFO buffer getting too full, then the pipe getting broken.

Obviously, for some reason the browser is stuffing bytes into the
buffer faster than X-windows can keep up.

What can I do to stop this annoying problem? Right now I am just
using man in a terminal window, but that is a pain in the keister...
