Hi & happy new year,

I know that this has been discussed before, but
didn't found any references. sorry is its FAQ.
It is also clear that all the questions are answered
by buying a sgi cd drive. Just out of curiousity,
how do I install stuff via a non-sgi cd drive,
attached to a remote non-sgi workstation ?

1. exec environment is installed via local tape (4.0.1)
   (local machine VGX320)

2. a SUN drive is attached to an Indigo (R3000), but
fails with SCSI timeouts (hinv o.k.).

3. the develop. SGI-CD is fed into an HP drive attached to
an HP750, but couldn't be mounted.

4. same with SUN drive attached to an ELC

5. (haha, new idea:) the CD is copied from the remote
(HP drive/750) raw device via dd to an Indigo raw
disk file (/dev/rdsk/dks0d2s6). mount fails and fsck
doesn't like the raw disk at all.

I understand that HP and SUN don't accept the efs filesystem
on the installation disks and that non-sgi drives won't work
on sgi boxes (may or may not).
Why does the raw-raw transfer from remote drive to local disk fails ?
dd problems (filled-up blocks etc.) or more basic ?

Many thanks,

Peter
