Hogwash! We have printers on SGI's and Sun's and use lpr exclusively
to send files to from ALL machines and with no problems. Just manually set
up your printcap and hosts.lpd files the same as you would on any standard
BSD UNIX machine. Currently we are using parallel ports on our SGI's for
the printers, however I know of people who use the serial ports too.
Good luck.

No, it isn't. Once again folks, remember that there is a *big* difference
between "works", and "is supported".

OK, but what do you use for the BSD filters ?? Our suns have NeWSprint (as
probably do yours) which is not portable to SGIs.
So what does a typical entry in you SGI printcap looklike for a postscript printer on the parallel port ?

Why does SGI state in the system admin manual "Sillicon Graphics, Inc. does not support using lpr on your system to access a printer that is connected directly to your system ?" Are there some bugs in the sgi implementation of lpr ? Is it just that it is not in the prefered flavour of System V ?
