HELP! --- sendmail.cf updated from 3.x to 4.0.5

First, many thanks to those who responded on my previous dumb
question: indeed the C compiler for version 4 was packaged on a
seperate tape (whcih has been misplaced :-( ) and the inst program
graciously deleted the old version.

Now I have an equally naiive question, but one that has gained me a
lot of blank stares and well-wishes from non-IRIX sys-admins. In
moving to 4.0.5, the sendmail.cf file has changed structure
dramatically.

For most installations, this may not be much of a problem, but here in
a large university, domain organization is not so friendly. I managed
to sort through enough to restore our outgoing mail and the plain
vanilla incoming addresses, but one problem remains that is causing
headaches for our feeder sites: virtual.rose.utoronto.ca is also
(apparently often) referred to as virtual.rose.toronto.edu or
virtual.toronto.edu --- in its present state, my sendmail.cf is
rejecting mail with those addresses.

I know the rules to add (or I hope the old rules will still work) but
the question is where to add them. How does one go about tracing
sendmail's ability to receive these alternate addresses? Any
comments, suggestions, yes and even just well-wishes :-) gratefully
accepted! Solutions earn eternal gratitude from my feeder sites :-)

Gary,

The sendmail.cf.latest in sgi/sendmail on sgi.com (available via
anonymous ftp) includes the following ruleset:

#### w class ###############################################################
# Alternate names by which this host may be known.
# This class is pre-set to contain the h_name and all h_aliases of this host
# as returned by gethostbyname(3N). If additional aliases are required,
# they may be added here.
Cw

If you add the host names you mention in this rule set, your host
will accept mail addressed to these domains -- you are in effect
telling your mailer that these are pseudonyms for your real domain.

My eternal gratitude for Robert Stephens of SGI for adding this class at
my suggestion some time back ..... :-)

	ian

PS another route to take would be to build sendmail 5.65c/IDA-1.4.4.1
which allows even greater control and flexibility. Your mileage will
vary.
