Hello there,

two weeks ago we received two Micropolis 9GB hard disks. scsicontrol reports
   sc1d4l0: Disk MICROP 1991-27MZ 1020SHT01
   ANSI vers 2, ISO ver: 0, ECMA ver: 0;
Response format type 1, but has SCSI-2 capability bits set
supports: reladdr synch linkedcmds cmdqueing. inquiry format is SCSI 1
   Device is ready

When we got the drives, I wanted to create new partitions with fx (5.3 version
under IRIX). However, the only result I got was messages like

dks1d4vol: Media error: Media format corrupted (asc=0x31, asq=0x0)
dks1d4vol: Media error: Seek position error (asc=0x15, asq=0x0), Block #4591
   dks1d4vol: Media error: Write fault (asc=0x3, asq=0x0)

when fx wanted to write back the new partition layout. Reading from the drive
was ok, so I rule out SCSI problems.

My question: After sending the drives back for repair, they now work. The
company claims they had written some wrong setup info to the disk so they
couldn't be recognized by SGI machines. Could I have corrected this also
using fx? (I tried to alter some of the drive parameters in the corresponding
sub-menu, but modification always failed with the above messages).

Btw, in label/show/all (name field in sgi-info) I read something like
"PTI-scsi-toolbox". I understand that the company uses a PC to set up drives
and never connected these two to a real SGI machine.

This sounds like a voltage/power supply problem more than anything else.
I don't know anything that could be configured into the drive such that
a write comes back with a media error, but read does not. Of course,
they firmware could be buggy, and they could have upgraded it, or the
drives could have been flaky.

Shouldn't matter.
