help with NFS and automount

I'm having trouble comprehending/setting up automount (IRIX 5.3), and was
hoping y'all could help.

NFS manager (as y'all know) allows mounting a remote directory (eg.
saturn:/usr/people/smith) in just about any local directory I choose (eg.
/usr/people/smith/saturn). Is it possible to do something similar using
automount _without_ using NIS? I've tried several configurations ...
here's one example (if I remember correctly):

/etc/config/automount.options:
      -v -f /etc/auto.master

/etc/auto.master:
#mount point map name map options
      /- /etc/auto.direct -intr, nosuid, nodev

/etc/auto.direct:
      #directory options location
      /usr/people/smith/saturn saturn:/usr/people/smith

This only sort of works. I think it mounts the remote directory under
/tmp_mount(?)/saturn/user/people/smith, and then makes a link at
/usr/people/smith/saturn -- kind of a pain if you "cd saturn" and then "cd
.." thinking you're going back to your home directory. I'd like to have
multiple directories that can be automounted (in the directories of my
choice) so I'd rather not be limited to one mount point -- or do I have no
choice?

Along similar lines, is it possible to login to pluto (for example), and
have a remote directory as my home (eg. saturn:/usr/people/smith)
_without_ using NIS? If so, how?

Thanks for the help in advance.
