There was talk months ago about a soft-mac for SGI. Does anyone know if this has happened? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- David Haight | davidh8@pogo.wv.tek.com | INTERNET Tektronix, GPID Div. | ...!tektronix!pogo.wv.tek.com!davidh8| UUCP PO Box 1000, M/S 63-630 | (USA) (503) 685-3151 | VOICE Wilsonville, OR 97070 | (USA) (503) 685-3063 | FAX -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Unlikely. Apple would sue. That's why there are no Mac clones.

A full-blown emulator that also has the matching look-n-feel. Liken is a Mac-emulator from Xcellerated Systems (?) that works on several platforms (Sun, HP, and soon IBM). It got a good review in Open Systems Today a few months ago. B&W only (but color RSN), 6.0.7 (but 7.0 RSN) and reasonable performance. I called Liken and asked if they were doing an SGI port and a sales guy said they were thinking about it. He also said it's only going to take 4 months for the IBM port, so if they decide to, it won't be too far away. Liken has sold many copies, and so far has avoided Apple's wrath. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian McClendon bam@sgi.com 415-390-1110 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apple would sue. That's why there are no Mac clones. I've seen at least 2 Mac software emulators on Sun machines. Both as I recall were limited to about a Mac Plus in performance and capability (no colour), and couldn't run System 7. In July, Quorum Software had a settlement of a lawsuit against Apple which apparently cleared the way for them to go ahead with software emulation of a Mac (though my understanding is that they do not implement the Mac look and feel). When I first heard of Quorum, SGI was on the list of planned platforms, but I've heard nothing more specific since. -- Philip Machanick philip@concave.cs.wits.ac.za Department of Computer Science, University of the Witwatersrand 2050 Wits, South Africa phone 27(11)716-3759 fax 27(11)339-7965
