Motif in overlay planes?

I have a mixed-mode window that takes several seconds to draw.
This window has a pulldown menu that naturally overlaps the
mixed-mode drawing area.  When the menu selection is finished
the menu pop-down causes an expose event which results in a long
redraw wait.

Is there any way to put the Motif graphics (or at least the pulldown
menu graphics) in another group of bitplanes, such as the overlay
bitplanes?  Any other options since the Xsgi doesn't support backingstore?
