    xv  (as of version 2.21) appears to manipulate images up to 24-bit RGB,
even though it cannot display them with more than eight bits.  Corrections
or pointers to newer versions are entirely welcome.

The cropping functions etc. are indeed friendly, though I have encountered
certain TIFF images which  xv  was unable to successfully read.

    (One of these days I'll get around to adding support for  .rgb  format!)
