What do I use instead of ginit?

I recall reading here (many moons ago, when I didn't need it) about
how ginit() is evil under 4.0.X and should be replaced by something
else.

I have an application that uses ginit to occupy the whole screen,
then uses tpon and tpoff to bring up and put away the textport
while the program is running. Under 4.0.X this doesn't work any
more -- the tpon command freezes the screen and the program has to
be externally killed.

Does anyone remember the fix for this?

Thanks in advance,
