problem with sysmeter on an Indigo
#147

when I run 'sysmeter' on an Indigo Elan running Irix 4.0.5F, I get the
following message and accompanying error at the bottom of /usr/adm/SYSLOG:

sysmeter: can't get stats: Remote system error

Jan 5 15:42:25 ewald rstatd[307]: read: iotim: No such device or address

I have made sure 'inetd' is running, but is there something else that I might
have configured wrong on the host?

Thanks in advance for the help.

It is a bug in 405F that shows up (mostly on systems with Elan graphics)
on some configurations. It will probably not be fixed before the
next major release (it still hasn't been tracked down).

It also occurs on our several R4000 Indigos with Entry graphics, at least when
I "rup" them. Same error.

While not a critical problem for this purpose, I suppose that rstatd
being broken might break something else, or be part of a larger
problem.... I'd like to see a fix for this sooner than "the next major
release" (I've been seeing that as the time for fixes for years now
:-)).

BTW: When IS "the next major release"?

Well, I'm running sysmeter on my R4k Indigo Elan under IRIX 4.05F and it
works fine. There're no error messages in /usr/adm/SYSLOG.

Nope, it is confined to rpc.rstatd; sar -d (which has very
similar code) works fine on the failing systems. It affects
sysmeter, and rup, and probably a few local apps here and there,
but they are all in the nature of things that are sort of nice
to have, but not criticl.

| BTW: When IS "the next major release"?

The announced IRIX 5.0 is 'sometime in calendar 93', and nothing
more concrete than that, as far as I know.
