Wrong. They bought a company which was producing products based on MIPS
processors and changed it to be based on x86's (after the acquisition, or so
all the evidence would indicate). I run a few Raq-2i's here for the
non-profit Internet organistion I'm involved with
("http://www.sydney.apana.org.au" is the URL for those who are interested),
and I'm entirely happy with them. The Linux installation is becoming dated
(still a v2.0.34 kernel, not sure what 'strand' of Linux it's based on), but
I'm yet to come across a web-based management interface for an embedded Unix
platform that's better than what Cobalt's software engineers developed.
If Sun isn't interested in continuing the Cobalt server appliance line they
should spin the company back off as a seperate entity and let it go rather
than kill it just to remove another potential competitor (such as what Sun
did when they bought StarDivision in order to obtain ownership of
StarOffice).
Craig.
