The on-board SCSI controller is based on a Symbios 53c876 controller. It's
configured with single-ended termination on both channels. This means it
will work with older SE drives and newer LVD drives.

If you need to use a HVD device (like a tape array), you need to obtain a
PCI HVD card. Sun sold the Symbios SYM-22802 dual-channel HVD SCSI card as
their x6541a product (you'll see them selling for ludicrously-high prices on
Ebay from time to time), but I've used other HVD cards with similar
single-channel and dual-channel Symbios/LSI controllers and they all worked
fine.

The key thing to look for is that the SCSI controller is picked up by the
'glm' driver in Solaris, and that the device driver binds to the controller
properly. A lot of Symbios controllers in the 53c89x series will not work
because the driver doesn't support all revisions of those devices, but
anything using the older 53c87x devices will usually work fine.

The Ultra 30, which was the pre-cursor to the Ultra-60, uses the 53c875
(single-channel version of the 53c876) on the system board. On Ultra 60's,
the internal and external SCSI buses are totally seperate, which can be very
advantageous.

Regards,

Craig.
