I think Sun dropped the Ultra-30's because they wanted to get the Ultra-60
out which is basically a similar machine but with capacity for two
processors instead of one. They use exactly the same case I believe, and the
U-60 motherboard can replace a U-30 motherboard to upgrade a U-30 machine to
be multi-processor capable.
I don't know if there are any other signnificant differences to the on-board
hardware... Maybe the U-60's have less room for PCI cards? Or the
installation of multiple Creator/Elite/Expert framebuffers cards could be
more difficult in the U-60 because of the space taken up by the extra CPU
module location.
U-30's are becoming very affordable very fast now that the Ultra-80 is out
and people are only interested in current lines (U-60, U-80, etc.), so
U-30's are being passed in for something better.
I don't know if there are any limitations on what CPU's can be installed in
U-30's though - someone else will need to clarify this question since it's
one I'd like an answer too also.
Regards,
Craig.
