I've thought about this a fair bit lately, but what would be good is to
see Dallas fix up the DS-1642 so that the niggly incompatibilities between
it and the Mostek part are eliminated (even though Dallas claim their part
is a drop-in replacement for the Mostek part), and then do something
really smart and combine a small lithium cell with a DS-1633 programmable
battery charger chip all in the one package.

This would make the NVRAM battery last as long as there is a need for it,
not some paltry 4 to 5 years. Building in a DS-1633 or similar means the
lithium cell can be recharged quickly when main power is available, and
then the cell is fully charged everytime main power fails (mains failure,
or the machine is switched off normally).

The result - no more dead NVRAM batteries!

Regards,

Craig.
