See my summary below.

The kernel will tell you as part of it's initialisation process once it's
given control from the boot program.
>4. Are there any OS support issues for either of these two?
This is covered below...

A guide to Sun P4 colour frame buffers - updated 29-Feb-1996
--------------------------------------
Written by Craig Dewick (craig@zeta.org.au)
Here is a brief summary of Sun P4-bus colour frame buffers that I know
about (or have used or possessed at one time or another)...
501-1210 : 3/60 only cg4 non-accelerated 8-bit colour frame buffer. Uses 4 x
BNC for output. I tried using one of these with a 3/80 board
once that wasn't in it's case, but it failed. The P4-bus
between Sun-3 (68020-based) and Sun-3x (68030-based) machines
is apparently slightly different, and the -1210 seems to show
this up.
501-1248 : a cg4 variant. I don't know anything about this one except that
it supposedly exists.
501-1371 : cg8 non-accelerated 24-bit colour frame buffer. Uses 4 x BNC for
output. This frame buffer is *very* slow, and is not supported
by mainy early boot rom versions. Sun's distributed version(s)
of Openwindows know about it, but the X11R6 24-bit Xserver
code is broken. There are reportedly patches for X11R5 which
make the R5 cg8 support work.
501-1443 : generic cg4 non-accelerated 8-bit colour frame buffer. Fit's
3/80's directly (most come with a 3/80-fitting panel attached)
but can be used in other machines with a P4-bus (right up to a
4/4xx I believe!). Uses a D13W3 for output.
501-1518 : another variant of the cg8, but uses a D13W3 for output instead
of 4 x BNC connectors. I don't know what the hardware differences
are between this and the -1371 cg8, if any.
501-1532 : cg6 vector-accelerated 8-bit colour frame buffer. This is the
fastest P4-bus colour frame buffer that exists. It works in all
machines with a P4-bus, althought like the cg8, it generally
requires a late-revision boot rom to be used at power-on time.
I've use my -1532 on a 3/60 and a 3/480 without any problems, and
the performance of X11R6 is greatly improved with one of these
frame buffers fitted. Uses a D13W3 for output.
That's all the info I can provide about P4-bus colour frame buffers.
There are also a number of monochrome P4-bus frame buffers but I don't
have anything on them (yet!).
---- end ----
Regards,
Craig.
