This is not directly hardware related, but there doesn't seem to be a group
discussing hardware drivers and this seems the closest. I have three
questions:
1) I have spare HSI/S ports (the HSI/S is a high-speed synchronous serial
adapter card) and would like to be able to use them as asynchronous ports.
I believe the card hardware can do this, but the supplied Sun drivers
are sync (HDLC/SDLC) only. Does anyone have a suitable driver?
2) Can the mouse/keyboard ports on a 4/670 motherboard be used as normal
async ports? The USART is the same as the motherboard serial ports.
Has anyone done this? Does anyone have any ideas?
3) I have access to a rubidium standard which I would like to use as a
time reference for a Sun. A simple solution would seem to be to feed
an appropriate signal (1 pps, 1 pulse/min or 1 pulse/hr) into one
of the serial port(*) control lines. This control line being configured
to cause an interrupt. The interrupt handler stores the high-resolution
clock value. This clock value can then be used by a normal process to
phase lock the SunOS TOD clock to the incoming interrupts.
Does this seem reasonable? Has anyone else synched their Sun to an
external clock reference? If so, how? Does anyone have suitable kernel
drivers for either this approach (or a simplar one)?
(*) Serial ports meaning either the 2 RS-232 ports, the mouse port or the
keyboard port on the 670 motherboard.
Please mail me replies and I will summarise to the net if sufficent interest
is shown.
PS: I realise that a frequency standard is not a time standard, but I can
handle the discrepancies (like leap seconds) in other ways.
