Nobody redefined anything :) It's just a matter of what base you are using
IE 10^3 = 1000 for base 10 and 2^10 = 1024 for base 2.  Since most computers
compute using bits SIGMA = {0,1} base 2 is used. The closest power of two
that equals a KILO is 1024. Of course the original meaning of KILO was
1000, but that was arbitrary because the first base used was decimal :)

Just think of KILO and MEGA as being:

  KILO = MIN (ABS((10^3 - BASE^POWER)),0)
  MEGA = MIN (ABS((10^6 - BASE^POWER)),0)

Or some might want to just say (10^3 - BASE^POWER) > 0 vs. ABS() tho that
wouldn't be quite correct.
