Hi all, Could someone out there to let me know how to correctly format Seagate 50GB hard drive ST150176LC to get its maximum possible formatted capacity on Solaris or Linux? I have a difficulty in formatting our new Seagate 50GB hard drive ST150176LC. I used sformat to format it both on our Solaris and Linux, and after formatting I got only 10331 data cylinders which corresponds to about 40GB, whereas a data sheet of ST150176LC says it has 12024 total cylinders. Actually when I set the number of data cylinders in formatting procedure, I got a warning: "WARNING: Alternate cylinders exceed end of disk. (1691 cyls)". I just proceeded by ignored it. The I got only 10331 data cylinders which is almost 20% less than the actual data cylinders (12022=12024-2(alternate cylinders)), after formatting. In the following I refer a part of sformat output in formatting procedure. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Enter number of data heads (Label) 22 (1 - 65534)/<cr>: Enter number of data sectors/track (Label) 369 (1 - 65534)/<cr>: Enter number of alternate cylinders (Label) 1 (1 - 10)/<cr>:2 Schtze cap: 97610832 ist cap: 83886080 Current lncyl: -1 Schtze lncyl: 10331 old: 12022 new: 12022 Enter number of data cylinders (Label) 10331 (1 - 12022)/<cr>:12022 WARNING: Alternate cylinders exceed end of disk. (1691 cyls) Use this label geometry? yes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can get a copy of data sheet of ST150176LC from: http://www.seagate.com/cda/disc/tech/detail/0,1248,44,00.shtml Our two systems are: 1. SUN SPARC-IIi running on Solaris 2.6 w/512 MB memory w/UltraWide SCSI interface 2. RedHat Linux 6.0 (AMD K6-2 333MHz) running on kernel 2.2.5 w/64 MB memory w/UltraWide SCSI interface I also tried SUN's original "format" command but no luck. Any input or suggestion about formatting large hard drives on UNIX or any other operating system would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Hiro Masuda masuda@r2tech.com
