Using SLIP/PPP to NFS via modem?

I'm attempting to use either SLIP or PPP and NFS to connect a Sparc2 to a
Sun 3/50 via Telebit T1600 modems.  

Has anybody ever done this (or something similar) before?  Any and all
pointers would be appreciated.
