What is the current status of Supercomputing Review? May 92 was my last
issue and I still have a year and a half left on my subscription. When I
called the magazine's phone number in July, they answered as SUPERNET
INTERNATIONAL. I was told that in order to be more 'timely' they would no
longer be printing a 'hard copy' of the magazine, but instead would be
placing everthing online on SUPERNET. She said the balance of my
subscription would be used to pay for access to SUPERNET. I was also told
that information regarding subscription balances would be sent out in the
mail. I have yet to receive anything.
When SUPERNET came out, it was stated that it was provided FREE through
corporate sponsors. This was reiterated in a recent e-mail I received from
SUPERNET a few weeks ago. What's going on? Has SR gone under? If they
did it's a shame - I really enjoyed the magazine.

Whether they actually went under or had a sex change
is not clear. But it looks like what started out as
an "add-on" feature, SUPERNET, has taken over.

I think this is a very bad idea. I've even said so
on SUPERNET, only to have my comments deleted by
their censors.

I looked forward to receiving SR every month, and
usually read my issues at a cafe after work, or
during lunch, or in the backyard at home.

I found SUPERNETs interface to be so lame and
retarded that I'm loathe to use it. I guess one
could search around to find the articles you'd
want to read, download them, print them, and then
read them next time you go to the bathroom.

But why?

Its really dumb. And especially if now they are
going to ask us to PAY for this.

I would complain regarding the unused $$ of your
subscription. Sounds to me like they are pocketing
the cash to cover expenses.

Maybe its time for some one else to pick yp the
pieces are publish another magazine for the
supercomputing community.

How about "Supercomputer User" for starters?
Anyone want to invest?

When I called Supernet a few weeks ago, they told me that they had a probable
buyer for Supercomputing Review and that they expected the magazine to resume
publication. They said they would be sending something out in the mail this
month. I guess I am not inclined to hold my breath however. A pity, I too
enjoyed this magazine and found it informative. I hope this is not an omen
of the future of supercomputing.

You might look at one or all of the following:

1) Parallelogram.
	32 Fitzroy Square, London W1P 5HH, UK
	Tel +44-71-387-4296
	Fax +44-71-388-5975

2) Supercomputer, European Watch.
ASFRA BV, Voorhaven 33, NL-1135 BL Edam, The Netherlands
	Tel: +31-2993-72751
	Fax: +31-2993-72877

3)	Supercomputer
Same publisher as in item 2 above.

4)	Journal of Supercomputing Applications
I think this is IEEE or SIAM. More academic than the ones above.

5)	Parallel Computing
I think this is Springer-Verlag. Also quite academic.

There are others, of course.

Speaking for me,
Shahin.

Hi Richard!
Time for another supercomputers and graphic meeting eh?
We must do it again.

Is this so? Something like the Prodigy incident?
Can you elaborate?

Yeah, I had a few problems with the hierarchical interface, but that's
a very common thing to do with lots of novice people.

The problem I had was that I recently got email from them asking to
come back. The email note contained my password to their account
>>IN THE CLEAR. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. So I recommend subscribers to<<
>> ^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^<<
change their passwords to something they don't use on other hosts.
This contrasts to some of the one-way schemes used by most systems.
Didn't they have an article on supercomputer security some time ago?

The other problem I've had are occasional editorial problems (any
magazine can have them), one can tell they read this Usenet group.
E.g., David Kahaner's first name was once printed as something other than
David.

How about Scientific Programming?

8^)

Let me say that I think SR was trying to do something very brave in today's
economic climate, they just need a little guidance. Their orientation
is just a tad batchy/IBMish/CRIish. One occasionally wonders what
workstations are doing in a magazine oriented to supercomputers. I am
certain that I and others will watch with interest what happens. Meanwhile,
I should log in and change my passwd.
