6th list of the world's most powerful computing sites as of 10-JAN-1993 ======================================================================= This list is a compilation of the world's most powerful computing sites as submitted to me by Usenet readers and compiled from various other sources. It is ordered more or less by computing power. This list will be posted out weekly to people on my mailing list and monthly to comp.sys.super If you have any corrections, changes, additions or deletions to make to this list, please mail them to me 'gunter@uwa.oz.au' providing information in the format shown below. +32,348 MFLOPS - (05-JAN-1993) Livermore Computer Center, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, 7000 East Avenue, Livermore, California 94550, United States of America. seager@llnl.gov 1) Cray? Just because they can't defend their position here (not having USENET :-):

Makes you wonder what they do in Livermore :-)

Can't see what NCAR and LLNL are doing at the same paragraph.
Read:
Star Warriors by William Broad.
[old, obsolete]
I think the physical science stuff is far more interesting than
some of their computing stuff (pardon my friends who work there).
Bill Gosper pointed out the grottiness of physicist code ;^).
Too bad you can't easily take a tour. I have a 4 inch sabot from
the last tour milled at the High Explosives Applications Facility as a
paper weight. The defunct mirror fusion facility is interesting as are
the Nova Lasers. They produced a nice 40 year ann. from founding booklet
which you might be able to write for copies to LLNL.
