serial cable and modems

I've got a high-speed modem now, and want to use with my E1. I've
tried connecting the two, but I get no response from the modem. this
suggests that the connection needs a "null-modem" widget in there.

unfortunately, I've lost the one I had, so I haven't tried it.

does anyone know this for a fact? I can print just fine with the
serial cable as it is. I haven't tried connecting it to anything else,
because to do file transfer, I've generally downloaded to the
MacIvory, the used copy-file to move things to the Explorer.
