A friend of mine invested some money to a sperry 5000/??? computer.
It runs Sys Vr2.1 and has a tape drive installed. A few days it
worked well and then came a problems: after power-up it gives
following information:
LOG TASK = SSKE,0
ERROR CODE 1 = $0109
AUTO TEST SEQUENCE
TEST: IVT TOD EDC MMU MEM HIO
LOG TASK = HIO0,0
ERROR CODE 1 = $C00A

TEST: MPA
TEST LOAD ERROR $0581

LOG TASK = SSLS,0
ERROR CODE 1 = $0581

SWITCHING TO INTERACTIVE MENU
PRESS SPACEBAR TO CONTINUE

After that appears a menu that appears when machine is booted to
manual-state. About error-codes says manual the folloowing:

01xx SKE (SUS Kernal)
Cxxx HIO0 (High Performance 8-channel I/O Controller Level 0 Diagnostics)
05xx SSLS (SUS Load Supervisor)

When we try "INSTALL SYSTEM" from that menu that appeared after power-up
tells the computer:

LOG TASK = SSST,0
ERROR CODE 1 = $0609

and manual says: $06xx SSST (Streaming Tape Loader)

What could be broken? As far as I can remember the problem appeared
when a rs-cable between console-terminal and that machine was
accidentally pulled off from the plug when machine was up and running ..
after that the machine didn't ever boot again :-(
I can't see how a broken rs-cable could cause something to break down
in a computer - can it break something?
That machine claims that I/O-controller is broken - if it is, who
would like to sell us new one ? :-)

Sorry about spelling errors etc, my native language is Finnish.

If your HSIO (High Speed Serial I/O board) dies then this happens.
These seem to be fairly fragile, I've had one (and possibly a second) die
without even having terminals running on them, I think caused by bad power.
Unplugging a RS232 style cable is _always_ risky when the machine is
powered up, as the connector isn't designed for hot replacement.

YOUR HPSIO (High Performance Serial I/O Card is apparently not
passing the self-diag.

Before I you go out and buy a new one, TRY reseeding ALL the
cards. The backplane may be the source of your problems.

As one of the few surviving Unisys dealers in my area, I happen
to have 5000 series parts IN-STOCK. Let me know if I can help.

-good luck....
