I had a 40-meg ST238 (I think?) that would "klunk" quietly about once
a second, on powerup. COuldn't get it to work properly. Eventually I got
it to work when I had plugged on another drive (floppy?) to the power
connection - and the *extremely* wierd thing was that it would work from
one power connection, say J493 to the HD, J492 to the floppy, but
swapping them to J492 to the JD and J493 to the floppy, it wouldn't work.
(Note imitation connector numbers...)

The only possible idea I came up with on this was that the HD needed
*exactly* the right voltages, or it'd be irritated and not spin up.
With the extra load on the Z supply, it'd be happy. Could be that swapping
the supplies around is finding one with the "right" 5 and 12 volt settings
... check with a voltmeter, see how far off the supplies are on an otherwise
running Z supply (meaning one that's running a system, so it's properly loaded.
I bet you could load down the supply with a few RAM cards, and if the supply
was too high before, it might start the drive. |-} "Yeah, to run this
hard drive I needed an extra 512k of RAM..."
