Our technician now says the problem is not with communications per se.
He got together with our system manager and they found out that
the system is actually able to log on to a remote computer, but nothing
that is typed shows up on the screen.  So installing another serial
port as COM2 (as several people have suggested) doesn't really get at
the problem.

The problem isn't strictly with the video, either, because other 
programs run fine.  There's something weird going on with the way that
the comm port and video interact with one another.

We're stumped ...  any ideas?
