SWAN VGA Card in Z159?

I have an old reliable Z159, souped-up iwth a SOTA 386/16sx board, 3
emm cards, a Z449 card and a 1390 monitor. I recently attempted to
swap out the Z449 for a SWAN VGA card. When I attempted to re-boot,
I got a single "Beep" and then system locked up -- no video at all.
I put the 449 card back in & everything worked ok.
Anybody out there have any idea what problem might be? I *thought*
one could just slide vga cards into one of these machines.
My BIOS is 3.01B, somesuch. Would a BIOS upgrade help?

   Appreciate any/all suggestions.
