286LP *Hates* my New Conner 120Mb IDE Drive

...and I hate my computer! :)

This has been a fiasco.

I've got the stock 40Mb (actually a 43Mb Conner CP342) IDE drive in
this thing. I decide that with 720Kb free, and a little spare change
in my pocket, I'd upgrade to the Conner 120Mb IDE (CP30104) for $349.

In preparation, I went ahead and upgradedmy 3.2c ROM BIOS to the
latest and greatest version. No trouble there. Drive type 61 is the
perfect match for the new 120Mb drive.

Now, I get a new drive delivered from Hard Drives International. It
arrives and is dead. I send it back, get a replacement, and before
bringing it home, I try it at work, as a single drive, on a Gateway
386sx/20Mhz. Fdisk it (DOS 5), format it, no trouble. It works like
a charm.

I then bring it home. NO GO! Upon changing the drive type in the
SETUP routine, I get "+++ DRIVE NOT READY +++" or some such. Even
booting with a floppy (DOS 5) and running FDISK, I'm getting "error
reading fdisk."

The cabling is right. The pigtail for the power is hooked in.
All seems normal except the marriage between the two.

What am I overlooking?? There is only ONE jumper block (with three
positions) on the drive. The system won't recognize the new drive no
matter WHAT position it is in (especially the jumper position it
worked in on the Gateway!).

Can someone help save this drive and computer from a rapid flight out
of my study window?! ;)

Many thanks.

There are two different IDE PAL's for the 286lp. I believe it U305. The
chip has a ZDS part number screened right on it. The old one is 444-xxxx-00,
the new one is 444-xxxx-01. I am sorry I can't remember what the xxxx is but
you can look inside your machine to find out. You also may have to change
the position of J303.

Good Luck

The number of the desired PPAL is 444-640-1 (or 444-0640-01, depending on
where you see it). It is located on the expansion socket backplane board.

This is EXACTLY the solution!

Thankfully, our Zenith service folks at University Computing Services
pointed me in the right direction. I indeed had to upgrade the PAL on
the backplane board from a 444-640-00 to a 444-640-00-1. That, in
addition to moving the jumper from pins 1-2 at U104 to pins 2-3 got
the drive working.

Of course, all of this was outlined in my "Zenith Professional Desktop
Computer Owner's Manual" (part no 595-4251) :-) :-)

Now, if I could only upgrade the combined parallel/serial IO chip
(82C605) to get FIFO'ed UARTS for my spiffy new 14.4Kb modem, I'd be
THRILLED to death...and would have successfully brought this 4 year
old computer into the 90's. (It has been kicking and screaming all
the way, of course.)

My thanks to all!

Yes, If this is going into a Supersport 286 for instance,
you have to sold a pin from the bottom side of the Motherboard
to the 40 Pin ide hookup, for Superpsorts 342's use a onboard
IDE that's not on HD itself unlike regular IDE's, so let me check
my Board scmatic's and see if I can get you the correct pin.
  Jummper.
