HELP: DOSSHELL on ZenithTurboSport

I recently have bought a used ZenithTurboSport 386. The machine works
fine (programs, games, graphics), EXCEPT for DOSSHELL. Initiating
DOSSHELL in the various text modes results in a blank screen, whereas
in graphics mode the screen is filled with mumbo-dumbo characters.
Occasionally I have been able to get out of the SHELL by typing ALT-f4
hence I believe the invisible DOSSHELL is actually running correctly.

A TurboSport comes with a 640x400 CGA (double scan) paper white
screen. I am using DOS 5.0.

Anybody out there who knows what is going on?
