I've upgraded a ZDS 286 machine (Z248/12) to a Z386/25 using the Heath upgrade kit. Now I have the urge to add one and maybe even two more parallel ports so that this machine can "serve" three printers on a LANtastic network (it's back in a "printer" room, and seldom has any users). In digging out spare I/O cards and fooling around, I learned a bit about the standard IO card in this machine, but not enough. Even when I believe I have the second card set to LPT2 and the original card set to LPT1, I get a write fault on LPT2. These spare cards always seems to have extra serial ports around to confuse things, but I'm fairly certain I've disabled them (the original two are all I need). Are there are further tricks I need to know to get this machine to support multiple parallel ports? Yes, I've even set LPT2 to use IRQ=5 and still had trouble. In working out how to disable those extra serial ports, I found out that the manual I got describing the jumper settings for the Z I/O card may have errors in it. When I set the jumpers so that (according to the book) serial port 1 is COM1 and serial port 2 is COM2, I get conflicts with the two serial devices I have (mouse and label printer). When I return the jumpers to the state they were in when I received the upgrade kit (which the books claims sets both ports to COM1), I can use each device without trouble. So, maybe the book is just kidding me about the parallel port jumper settings? :) Any advice/war stories appreciated!
