SCSI in Z-386/16?

I am the lucky (:-)) owner of a 16-MHz Z-386. It has an ancient disk
controller which supports two floppy drives and two 40-Meg MFM drives.
Needless to say, I'm VERY short on disk space. I'd like to put in
a SCSI board--I was thinking of the Adaptek 1542 in particular--and
connect it to an external SCSI drive. If you'll excuse my naivete,
I'd like to pose some questions for those with more experience:
1. Is this even possible? The Zenith BIOS only knows about the
MFM controller. As I understand it, the SCSI controllers have their
own BIOS. Is there a danger of the two conflicting somehow?
2. Does the SCSI board need its own IRQ? Is there a good one to
use? (Besides the usual stuff, I just have an add-in board that gives
me two additional serial ports--I can reconfigure the board to switch
the IRQ's they use.)
3. Are there some brands of SCSI disk that would be better for this
use than others?
4. If I get the Adaptek board, could I also add an external CD-ROM
drive? I know SCSI is SUPPOSED to allow you up to 7 devices, but I also
know it often doesn't work that way.
I should add that my primary operating system is Linux, and my reason
for mentioning the Adaptek is that it's on the list of supported boards.
There are a few others, including the Ultrastore 14F (I think).
