Dead mouse

I have an DMD 5620, with one of those pretty red mice. I logged into
the sun I usually log into, started up layers, and was distressed that
I could only move the cursor vertically, but not horizontally.

To make sure that it wasn't something to do with layers, I exited, and
hit set-up...same problem. Same problem after doing a self-test.

I took the mouse apart, and everything appeared to be in order
mechanically.

Any ideas? I was going to test the cabling next...

99 times of 100, the symptom you describe is due to
potentiometer aging. Just open the mouse and fiddle with the
pots until it works. Then adjust each pot, one at a time, in
both directions until motion is no longer detected, and set it
midway between the ends of the working region.

In my experience, usually when the DePraz mouse behaves like this it can be
corrected by adjusting the quadrature threshold potentiometers (variable
resistors). As I recall there are four adjustments, two for each axis,
and usually a small tweak will get the tracking working again.
undoubtedly there is a proper way to set these using an oscilloscope etc.
but I've always been able to get by with trial and error. Make sure you
record exactly how the pots start out and make only small deviations
from that point.

Open then mouse, then...

Check to make sure that the two (X-Y axis spindles) are spinning
FREELY and EASILY. They should no offer any resistance to your finger
when you spin them. I had a mouse that had the X-axis spindle BENT,
and even though it looked fine (and spun with some effort) it did not
spin *FREELY*.

If they are both OK, then it's time to adjust/check the mouse hardware.
