Looking for help to improve Keith Muller's layers

In the past ten months or so I've made some improvements to Keith Muller's dmdlayers for Suns. There are a couple more improvements that I would like done but I can't really afford to take the time to do them so I thought I'd see if anybody else would like to volunteer. The main improvement that I've made so far is to have the libwindows Runlayer agent call work reasonably. Keith's layers allocated a socket to talk to the command to run, and what it really needs is a pseudo-tty. So I can now run a shell or any other interactive command in a new window using Runlayer(). I tried to get Keith to take this change back but he stopped answering my email. I guess there will have to be a new ftp site for dmdlayers.tar.Z one of these days. The main thing I'd like to see added to his layers is support for the 730's Network XT protocol. This is a feature in the newer 730s that enables using up to 252-byte packet sizes, and to not use the CRC checksums if it's going over an error-corrected LAN at the terminal. I could give the details to someone who's interested in working on it. You'd need a newer 730 (I think 8;8;7 or later) to test it out, preferably with a TCP/IP card. The other thing I would like to see done is to cleanly merge in changes for a port to MIPS' RISC/os. I did a port a year ago but the versions have diverged and the port wasn't done well in the first place. If there are other versions of Unix that you have ported his package to that could be cleanly merged into the same sources, that would also be welcome. If you're interested in doing either of these things, let me know. - Dave Dykstra dwd@graceland.ih.att.com
