control characters for screen display

I'm using an IBM clone with a VGA color monitor as a terminal with vt100
emulation for an unix machine. If I cat a binary file to the screen, I would
see all sorts of things happenning, such as color changing, high lighting,
cursor jumping or moving, even different sounds, etc. etc.. I just want
to know the table showing what control charaters or sequence of
charaters cause what effect on the screen. I looked at the manual
coming with the clone, but could not find any information about this.
Thanks for any help.
