wyse50 attribute takes a space!

i'm trying to improve our local termcap/terminfo for wyse-50.  i've
noticed how it *always* "skips" a space whenever setting attributes.

example:

echo "`tput smso`BOLD`tput rmso`normal"

displays:

<space>BOLD<space>normal

...rather than

BOLDnormal

is there any way around this?  i've tried (in terminfo) adding xmc#1, but
this is not effective.  help!
